Hole in the Wall Island
An amazing sunrise this morning! And while I was sitting on the sugar scoop taking pictures, a hummingbird paid me a visit.
Traveling north on the ICW, there were times we were alone with just water and wildlife. A lot of pelicans, multiple dolphins and various other birds.
The sun was hot but there was plenty of wind to keep us cool. We passed inlets to the ocean. The craziest is known as the "Crossroads". Picture a 4 way intersection with varying size boats of all speeds and no stop signs or red lights. Add a strong current and there is chaos.
After driving for hours we started thinking of anchoring by mid afternoon. Picking anchorage can be tricky. We need to stay in water deep enough that even with low tide we do not run aground. We need to be far enough away from other boats, beaches or pipeline crossings. We have also discovered that we do not want to be near bars/restaurants on the water or near inlets where traffic is nearly constant and keeps us rocking. Wreckages are also a sign not to anchor nearby. (Is that obvious?) We use our ICW books to tentatively choose and then proceed slowly to ensure depth.
Tonight, after driving 53 miles, we are anchored between Pine Island and Hole in the Wall Island just north of Vero Beach. There are only 2 other boats here, no ICW traffic and no wreckages!
Here's to a good night's sleep!
