Quiet Time in Rangeley

Image
We arrived in Rangeley by noon.  Temperature - 46 with a feel like of 40.  Yup - we started a fire while Fenway curled up in his blanket.  (Keeping an eye on us to make sure we are really staying and not leaving!) Though departing Lincoln at 5am was a bit painful (cold, dark), there was minimal traffic making the ride super quick.  Our stop in Farmington to pick up groceries - fairly painless.  And look what we saw parked at Walmart! Their groceries were lined up in the bed while they sat on metal folding chairs that were hopefully secured somehow! We unpacked, started a fire, ate a simple lunch and promptly fell asleep (huddled under a couple blankets).  Dinner and a movie while the jacuzzi was filling completed our day.  No hurry to start our To Do list until tomorrow!                                             My ...

Happy Mother's Day

Image
Happy Mother's Day.  We had an amazing day with lots of good food and great entertainment!  Thank you Karen and Alan for the lovely brunch, lunch and the yard where we enjoyed the beautiful sun and the kids' antics.  Definitely feeling blessed!                                                         Layla dancing and singing to an appreciative audience.                                                    TJ taking aim at the pesky hornets found in the umbrella.                                                ...

A really cool mushroom in Megan and TJs yard. Today's yard sale - not the resounding success we had hoped for since the weather was pretty miserable.  We persevered but the traffic was slow and sales even slower.  Thankfully the rain was intermittent so we could enjoy a very warm, very lovely fire in the fire pit.  And it is always good to hang with family.  One trip to Goodwill afterwards where I felt the attendants wondered why the poor people who were dressed in work clothes driving an ancient beat up truck were donating multiple boxes and bags of goods.   Paul and I have been mistaken as homeless twice prior to today.  The first time we were walking from the marina to Don and Kim's in Daytona (couple miles) with our laundry in a bag...

Tis the season.  Estate sales, yard sales, barn sales, garage sales - whatever they are called, I call them fascinating.  Today Karen found us an estate sale in Portsmouth, RI.  Being next to Newport, I would have thought the items would be higher end.  (Joke on me!)                                                       Beautiful flowers located amongst the yard debris. The interior of the house was full.  Full of people pawing through every cupboard, box, bag and closet looking for their lost treasure.  The hoarding included cleaning supplies that were allowed to accumulate without fear of ever running out (or being used).  Holiday items, wrapping paper, clothes, vinyl records, magazines, stationary, linens, beauty products, a full liquor "cabinet", dishes, and so many miscellaneous items...

Lake Chargoggagoggmanchauggagoggchaubunagungamaugg (Part 2)

Image
After prepping dinner (chicken pot pie), going food shopping (pantry items and dry goods for our trip to Maine), a delightful lunch with Lisa and Donna (El Rodeo - one and done there), a short nap and a movie, a few minutes sitting in the sun followed by a quick dinner, we headed out to the Lake again.  While we were there yesterday we met Willow and her owner who told us the beavers were very active at dawn and dusk every day.  So with nothing better to do tonight - we checked it out.  Well worth the trip.  Four of the beavers were busy swimming in the water.   The sunset - gorgeous.  And the dozens of turtles were just as entertaining.

I was ready for a break from "chores" and do some exploring today.  With threatened rain this afternoon, we headed out to Lake Chargoggagoggmanchauggagoggchaubunagungamaugg in Webster, Ma mid morning.  When I saw the name on my "things to do" search - I was in! The longest place name in the US and one of the longest in the world. Originates from the Nipmuc Algonquian language.  The popular translation - "You fish on your side, I fish on my side, nobody fishes in the middle." The authentic meaning - "divided" or "neutral" fishing place used by different Indian tribes Chargoggagogg indicating English knifemen and Manchauggagogg indicating Nipmuc Indian. The rain held off while we explored the area....

Beautiful!

A beautiful night for Maddy's last chorus concert as a senior at Ponaganset High School.  Well done!  (And so pretty!) And it was a beautiful day for a fast morning walk on the bike path with Lisa.   And a beautiful afternoon to paint outside!
