Grease/Wildlife

The theater was super cool.  The oldest theater in the country.  Very well maintained and apparently quite the variety of shows.  This was the first time I have seen Grease since John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John.  A lot of energy and funnier than I remember.

I loved the walk there - more ornate railings, homes and doors.

The walk back afterwards was a little creepy.  I can understand how the ghosts in Savannah want to hang out!  And I understand how the many businesses succeed selling ghost tours.  The Spanish moss and how the moonlight strikes it creates a seriously creepy ambience!

This morning we left for Tybee Island and the Marine Science Center.  Frustrating!  The center is located in the same parking lot as a popular beach.  There is only chaos in their parking system.  And the fact that it was in the 90s with high humidity and it was a Saturday in June - too many people.  We eventually found a parking spot not too far.  The center was worth it.  They rescue turtles and rehab them.

This is Westie.  Super cute and he didn't mind posing!

The staff were very knowledgeable and enjoyed sharing.  They had many hands on displays and a lot of space.

A picnic lunch in the car since it was too hot to find a table even in the shade.  Our next stop was the Oatland Island Wildlife Center of Savannah.

Mom stayed  in the welcome center while Maddy, Paul and I walked the premises.  What should have been less than a 2 mile walk to different animal enclosures turned into almost 5 miles since I cannot read maps correctly!  Ugh!  Really cool animals though!

The pathway was beautiful and full of life.

The large building across the extensive marsh is Thunderbolt Marine where we are docked.

My favorite spot was Ledbetter Pond.  The egrets, ducks and turtles all hanging out despite the thick green algae.

The dozens of egrets in the tree were super loud!

The well thought out trails also included a short trail called Kidz Trail.  Paul had to try it out.
An enjoyable day despite the heat.  The evening was spent on the air conditioned boat playing games and listening to music.  Dinner was burgers and corn on the cob on the grill with cold salad and potato salad.  Mummu bread for dessert.  Yum!
Mummu bread is a Finnish bread my paternal grandmother, Mummu, used to make us when we were kids.  Much like a cinnamon roll, my mom has figured out how to duplicate it with a bread machine.  (Mummu used to do it by hand)  Maddy carried the bread to Georgia in her backpack.   We appreciate it!
