A Preserve, a museum and a fort

Thinking the weather was going to be similar to yesterday, I decided a short morning hike would be appropriate.  We headed to the Grandview Nature Preserve.  What a beautiful surprise.  Thinking it would be mostly marsh, the path instead led to a secluded beach.  There were very few people, a long span of beach bordered on the Chesapeake and lots of seaweed.  We watched a multitude of military aircraft practice maneuvers while we walked the water line.  And it was hot!  Oops.  I should have looked at the weather forecast.

The decision to find an indoor activity was obvious.  We totally lucked out finding a parking spot just behind the Air and Space Museum.  What a great place with lots of hands on displays and even a kids room where they can engage with the exhibits.

The star of the show was Apollo 12.  Seeing the burned heat shield and reading their story was fascinating.

Many, many airplanes from the Wright brothers to commercial planes to experimental, all were hung from the ceiling with detailed descriptions.  An IMAX movie about astronauts training underwater in Key Largo, and exhibits of the solar system and phases of the moon and the moon landings.

Another favorite of mine was the observation deck.  Climbing to the roof we had access to view the surrounding waterfront and city.  Almost as much fun as a lighthouse!

After a swim at the hotel pool, and dinner we visited the nearby fort, Fort Munroe.  This area has been adapted around the old fort.  There are houses, apartment buildings, stores, restaurants and a church.  Super quaint and very clean.  There is a walking path that skirts the bay and tonight was the perfect night to be out.  A cool breeze and the temp in the mid 70s, many people were out and about.

The Old Point Comfort Lighthouse is located near the fort.  Another unable to climb.:(

We were able to witness the sunset before heading back to the hotel.  The hotel I have thoroughly enjoyed with free breakfast including made to order omelets.  Paul did good finding this gem for <$100/night!

Tomorrow we head north again towards Rhode Island.
