Canaveral National Seashore

A chilly morning here in Daytona.  We donned long sleeve shirts and set out for a bike ride to the post office.  Struggling against the wind with eyes tearing and noses running we made it a short ride.  Circling back to the house via Riverside Drive was much easier with the wind at our backs.  Time to head south! (And hopefully a tad warmer.)

Our destination was Canaveral National Seashore, just south of New Smyrna.  It was well worth the entry fee.

                                                Somebody made a valentine!

The beach was absent of people and birds, probably due to the chilly winds.  Still it was pleasant walking and picking shells.

There were hiking trails spread throughout the area and we ventured out into the "wild".

Despite warnings of bobcats, snakes and other wild animals, we saw nothing!  (Probably a good thing since I was wearing flip flops.)

There were multiple docks and piers for fishing and launching kayaks on the ICW side of the peninsula.

Turtle Mound Site was definitely the most popular spot.  About 50 feet tall it is one of the few remaining sites the Timucuans have left behind with evidence of their lifestyle.  It has never been fully excavated but is being preserved.

The walkway led to the three different viewing spots.  Pretty cool how far one can see (7 miles).

The base of the mound is covered in oyster shells.   Bags and bags of them.  Apparently in 2020 volunteers moved these bags (donated by local seafood restaurants) from the parking lot and spread them around the base of Turtle Mound to counter the effects of erosion and damage from hurricanes.

The walkway to the base was a bit narrow and bit hazardous (I bumped my head on a low hanging branch!)

A very enjoyable afternoon!
