A Canal, A Gulf Beach and A Sunset

The only sound we heard this morning - the birds.  This sandhill crane was right outside our front door calling good morning to us!

We began our day with a kayak paddle along the canals.  Our AirBNB sits right on the water and happens to have a double kayak ready for oue use.  What a beautiful area.  Small homes with small docks and small boats on one side and natural marsh on the other for miles.

Our paddle had many twists and turns.

And then lunch and people watching at Fort Island Beach.  A brilliant 87 degrees and a moderate wind - the perfect beach day.  Defined as "off the beaten path", there were more people than anticipated but not as crowded as Sand Hill Cove on an 87 degree day.

More people watching at the nearby dock and boat ramp.  At the mouth of the Gulf, this is a popular spot.

After dinner and a shower we visited Crystal River Archaeological State Park.   A prehistoric ceremonial center and burial mounds (1200-1500 remains), this is touted as "the site" to watch the sunset.  Gorgeous, few people, great view and lots of tsetse flies.  Well worth the wait!
55 steps to the tallest mound.
