Ziggy's Haven Parrot Sanctuary.
Since we arrived in Inverness earlier than our check in time, we stopped at a parrot sanctuary. Ziggy's Haven Parrot Sanctuary was well reviewed but when we arrived I thought it was a little sketchy looking and debated turning around and leaving. I am so glad we persevered. Who knew so many birds needed to be rehomed. Most are surrendered by their owners or confiscated from hoarders. The volunteers are very knowledgeable, friendly and eager to share the birds' stories and progress.
These guys have such tiny feathers, their heads look like velvet. There were actually quite a few with bald chests from stress and PTSD. Whether from the environment change or former abuse, it is unlikely the feathers will grow back. :(
Besides the almost 250 birds (their max) there was a pig:
some badly behaved geese:
lots of chickens with one particularly sassy:
Inverness was way larger than I had imagined. We wandered through the historic "Olde" town.
The ride across Florida was full of farms, lakes and quaint intersections. The weather couldn't have been better and we found plenty of small parks to stretch our legs.
