Strapping and Croozling

Today our plan was to begin installing the strapping.  Metal straps woven between the purlins on the roof and the girts on the sides of the building to increase stability.  When complete, we will have woven 300 feet of this thick metal strapping.

The day was cold.  Very cold.  With almost two inches of fresh snow on the ground and slab.  And windy.  Very windy.  Temps were in the low teens with feel like temps in the single digits.  Winds at 10mph with gusts to 30mph.  (Bad for the guy high on the ladders!)  I gave up my tee shirt for a long sleeved shirt.  Added another pair of socks, another pair of leggings and another pair of gloves.  Ugh.

It took three ladders of varying heights and moving them

around to weave the strapping through the purlins.

Each strap requires two screws at the start and at every contact with the purlin or girt.  Finding the right angle while dangling from a ladder and fighting wind gusts with frozen fingers (gloves have to come off for the finer work) = challenging.

We completed the entire left side of the roof purlins and the left side front and back girts.  We started the right rear roof purlin straps (no pictures because the sun had set and it was too dark!).

And tonight we will be croozling!  My new word for the day!  Snuggling deep under a duvet or blanket to stay warm and cozy.  The soft, sweet act of burrowing into comfort as the world chills outside. Yes!!!  I had finally pulled out our down comforter this morning and it is now on the bed and waiting for us!
