Double Folly
Our 4 am departure from Lincoln was wet. Pouring rain and fog accompanied us for many miles. We made it through New York and over the Washington bridge with some traffic but not horrible. Then Siri sent us through New Jersey via Route 78. Okay.
When entering the destination with one eye open at 4am, I chose Savannah. We just needed general directions through New York, Washington and then probably Virginia. Savannah seemed a logical choice.
Similar to the roads we traveled home on just weeks ago, we figured the Washington DC traffic must be horrific and we were being rerouted to save time. We didn't think anything of it. And it was really pretty, even with the rain and fog.
Very narrow, twisty roads.
Through Riegelsville, Pennsylvania (after sketchy side roads) on Route 611 then 81. All new to us. I was driving at this point while Paul napped. When I saw 773 miles on Route 81 I briefly thought "weird", but kept going. A few minutes in Maryland then West Virginia. Wait! What? West Virginia? Paul began researching our route. And found two errors.
First - in my choice of Savannah. How was I to know there is a Savannah in Tennessee? Yup, we were headed west of Nashville.
Second - apparently when my new phone was set up, the default setting was no toll roads. Yup - we have been adding miles to our trips by avoiding the tolls through Maryland and New Jersey and New York.
So we meandered back to 95 and continued south. More direct but very boring. Especially with the rain and fog.
We arrived in Emporia, Virginia just north of the North Carolina border, before 5pm and settled in a motel we have used before. Clean, quiet, free breakfast and priced right. Long day. But it is sunny and 80 degrees! When I left RI with flip flops on my feet, my toes were frigid. Now they are happy!
The plan - continue meandering south with plans to be in Fort Lauderdale by Sunday morning.
