Arsy-Varsy

Tis the season.  Estate sales, yard sales, barn sales, garage sales - whatever they are called, I call them fascinating.  Today Karen found us an estate sale in Portsmouth, RI.  Being next to Newport, I would have thought the items would be higher end.  (Joke on me!)

Beautiful flowers located amongst the yard debris.

The interior of the house was full.  Full of people pawing through every cupboard, box, bag and closet looking for their lost treasure.  The hoarding included cleaning supplies that were allowed to accumulate without fear of ever running out (or being used).  Holiday items, wrapping paper, clothes, vinyl records, magazines, stationary, linens, beauty products, a full liquor "cabinet", dishes, and so many miscellaneous items!  Paths were created to allow single file access to each room with careful stepping over and around others.  Yes some were on their hands and knees searching for that coveted item.

The basement was just as full of mounds of things that have piled up through many years.  Our foray into the dank cellar - short!

Of course we also had to check out the yard.  The land of the forgotten tractors.

There was an underlying sadness that someone(s) have lived here recently and this is their story.  Each item was purchased or accumulated for a purpose and must have meant something to those who hoarded each piece.  Being unable to lay in your own bed, eat a home cooked meal in the kitchen or even sit comfortably with visitors due to piles of stuff that must have lost their "value" - too high a price.

The remainder of my day consisted of readying Megan and TJ's for our yard sale.  Tables lining the driveway, washed and piled with totes and boxes that everyone has decided to "move along".  Signs posted at all cross streets and an ad in the local paper will hopefully help us achieve our goal of - nothing back in to the house!

Word of the day - arsy-varsy - in a confused, disorganized or upside down manner.  Yup - the whole house and yard!

Layla even stopped by for a quick visit and swing!
