Pawley's Island, SC

Image
Headed north this morning through the ACE basin.  Beautiful flat, wet, marshy, muddy, green area made up of the Ashepoo, Combahee and Edisto Rivers.  Silent except for the multitude of birds. We opted for the back roads to avoid traffic.  Being Sunday and hot and sunny, I figured there would be plenty of people headed for the water areas.  We guessed correctly and the traffic was minimal on Route 17. We arrived on Pawley's Island with plenty of time left for the beach.  We even got lucky and found a parking spot only steps from the walkway.  Course it probably had something to do with the incoming dark clouds that were rumbling with thunder!  We ignored them.  There was no lightning so we figured we would enjoy the beach until then.  The water was clean, warm (82) and the waves plentiful.  It was perfect for "swimming".  Might as well say we went in the water and got wet.  And tossed around.   The clouds kept th...

Low Country South Carolina

This is an absolutely gorgeous area of South Carolina,  The roads are surrounded by marshes and wetlands that are alternately mud then flowing creeks depending on the tides.   We headed to Hunting Island, one of the barrier islands and classified as a state park.  Five thousand acres of well maintained roads, boat ramp, lighthouse, beaches and nature centers.  We walked a total of 5 miles in bits and pieces since the feel like temp in the low 100s again and the humidity was high.  Thankfully the clouds came and went and both the car and nature centers had air conditioning.   Unfortunately the lighthouse is closed due to safety concerns.  We had been excited to add this one to our list of lighthouses we have climbed.  :( Very real like replicas! Returning from the island we passed through Beaufort.  Beaufort is a cute little town that ran Dragonboat races today.  Though we missed the actual races we did witness the music a...

May River, South Carolina

Walking around on the deck of Quiet Time while she is up on blocks and stands on concrete is disconcerting.  I am way more comfortable with the boat gently rocking on the water.     We spent a quick couple hours covering the dinghy to prevent sun damage, spreading damp rid in buckets throughout the cabins, securing nav covers and lockers. We also taped over our one leaky window. :( The dehumidifier seems to be running and draining perfectly.  Placed in the kitchen sink, it drains onto the concrete below. Done by 10am we started our journey north.  We chose back roads and enjoyed the less traveled immensely.  Brick is everywhere! Containers and trucks are also everywhere.  So much stuff being moved from here to there and everywhere! Our last stop in Georgia was at Houlihan boat ramp.  We had a picnic lunch (Meatloaf sandwich for Paul and the last of engagement party salad for me!  Thank you Isis!).  The rain threatened but held...
