Mackay River - Wally's Leg

Image
Another early departure and we continued north.  So many bridges. The river is so shallow for much of this leg in Georgia that we are only traveling during high tide.  Okay with me.  By the time we anchored at noon it was 88 degrees, feel like temp of 95 and humidity 60s - 70s.  We anchored in a remote leg of Mackay River.  I saw my first alligator swimming in front of the boat.  No swimming today! A few dolphins and a lot of birds.  No people! When the rain came I decided to take advantage and quickly took my long handled scrub brush, Dawn soap, and scrubbed the deck.  The downpour rinsed everything.  So easy!  (I did quit though when the lightning started.) No dancing in the moonlight tonight.  😞

Another beautiful, calm morning/  We headed out early before the world awakened (including the nasty horse flies!).  It is still strange that after the heavy boat traffic in the Ft Lauderdale and Daytona areas, that we now see so few boats. Cumberland Island was to our east and reminded me of the Maine coast.   St Andrew sound was quite peaceful. We arrived just before noon and after feeling comfortable the anchor was set, we headed out in the dinghy.   The walk to the beach village was just over a mile.  We found bug spray (We never thought to bring any!) and postcards and ice cold drinks!  Although only 82 degrees today, the humidity is in the 70s.   A quick walk on the beach. A dinghy ride to shark tooth beach.  Where I found nothing resembling a shark's tooth. A sunset, a movie, a glass of wine and I am ready to call it a night.

Georgia!

We woke at the crack of dawn.  There is something so peaceful about being the only ones awake and watching the sun rise.  Watching another beautiful sunrise is humbling and breath-taking and I am so thankful I get to witness this incredible display of exquisiteness. The dolphins even came out to say goodbye.  They hadn't been hanging around so it was nice of them to take the time to swim around us as we left! The remainder of Florida was just as calm and peaceful as we motored towards Georgia. King's Bay was wide and calm and empty of vessel traffic except for the Coast Guard (answering a call for a distressed vessel) and a few police boats due to the naval base situated here. We stopped for the night at Floyd Creek, part of the Cumberland River.   We were greeted by pelicans. Dolphins (didn't get a pic) and the horse flies!!  Just before anchoring they showed up in droves!  I managed 2000+ steps chasing and killing them so Paul could drive witho...

The size of the barges that float by are huge.  The skill of the tug boats to get these monstrosities around the bends of the river with strong currents, differing winds and all without running aground - crazy! This train is responsible for interrupting my quiet times!  Several times a day through two major intersections, the engineer blows the horn lonnnng and louuuud while moving an obscene amount of cars full of ? We meandered off the main drag today in search of The Amelia Island Museum.  Lots of cute homes with southern flair.  Lots of unusual decor twisted with humor. We found the museum.  A former jail, it was on the small side but well done.  A lot of information and exhibits without feeling crowded.   We stopped at an antique store where the owner's bird was free to roam.  His favorite spot with his best friend! We turned in our facility cards and said goodbye to the marina. One of our better sunsets!
